SATURNALIA,ASSOCIATED WITH THE WINTER SOLSTICE WAS A PAGAN ROMAN CELEBRATION,COMPLETE WITH MUCH EATING, MERRIMENT,AND DECORATIONS OF LAUREL AND GREEN. THE GIVING AND RECEIVING OF GIFTS WAS AS MUCH THEN AS IT IS NOW IN MODERN DAY CHRISTMAS.
HOWEVER THE ROMANS WERE GIVEN OVER TO IDOLATRY, THEY HAD MANY GODS AND ALSO AROUND THE TIME OF THE WINTER SOLSTICE, ROMANS ALSO OBSERVED JUVENALIA
[JUVENILES]A FEAST HONORING THE CHILDREN OF ROME.

DECEMBER THE 25TH WAS A DAY OF WORSHIP BY A SUN LOVING RELIGION FROM PERSIA OR MESOPOTOAMIA CALLED MITHRAISM, THE ORIGIN OF THIS BELIEF WAS IN ASTROLOGY AND GREEK PHILOSOPHY AND AN OFFSHOOT OF ZORASTRIANISM. MEMBERS OF THE UPPER CLASSES OFTEN CELEBRATED THE BIRTHDAY OF MITHRA, AN INFANT GOD WAS BORN OF ROCK. FOR SOME ROMANS, MITHRAS BIRTHDAY WAS THE MOST SACRED DAY OF THE YEAR

BRUMALIA, WAS CELEBRATED AS THE BIRTHDAY OF NATALIS SOL INVICTUS AND WAS ANOTHER CELEBRATION OF THE ROMANS. BRUMALIA AND SATURNALIA WENT HAND IN HAND TO HELP CELEBRATE THE EARLIEST KNOWN CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS. BRUMALIA WAS ALSO CELEBRATED BY THE BRITONS, GERMANS AND THE GAULS.
WHEN THE GERMANS WERE CHRISTIANISED THEY BROUGHT WITH THEM THERE GODS OF OLD PAGAN BELIEFS NAMELY
THOR,ODIN, NJORD, AND FREY [FRIDAY].

" CHRISTIANITY" WAS DECLARED AS THE OFFICIAL RELIGION OF ROME, THIS IS WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF TODAY.
AS PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT PAGAN RELIGIONS WERE DRAWN INTO THE NEW OFFICIAL RELIGION, THE CHURCH FATHERS CAME ACROSS MORE PROBLEMS, THEY COULD NOT ABOLISH THE HOLIDAY AND CELEBRATIONS THAT THEY HAD IN FACT STARTED, SO THEY JUST RE-NAMED THEM
TO SOME THING MORE PALATABLE. HOWEVER THE CATHOLIC CHURCH STILL HAS A LOT IN COMMON WITH MITHRAISM, NAMING CATHOLIC PRIESTS AS FATHER DESPITE JESUS,S SPECIFIC COMMAND TO THE CONTRARY

" AND DO NOT CALL ANYONE THIS EARTH " FATHER " FOR YOU HAVE ONLY ONE FATHER , AND HE IS IN HEAVEN" MATHEW 23.9

IN TRYING TO LURE MORE PAGAN WORSHIPPERS INTO CHURCH, THEY ALLOWED THEM TO KEEP THEIR WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATIONS AND RITES, BUT PUT THE NAME CHRIST ON IT , THEY CALLED IT THE MASS OF CHRIST, OR AS WE KNOW IT CHISTMAS

AT ABOUT 320 AD THE THEN POPE JULIUS 1 TOOK IT UPON HIMSELF THAT JESUS WAS BORN ON THE 25TH DECEMBER ABOVE AND BEYOND ANY TEACHINGS OF THE BIBLE AND ALSO DECIDED THAT SUNDAY WAS TO BE BE THE OFFICIAL HOLY DAY OF A SEVEN DAY WEEK [ FOR WHICH HE WAS IN FACT MADE A SAINT ]
EARLY CHRISTIANS FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS NEVER HAD ANY IDEAS OF CELEBRATING THE BIRTH OF CHRIST,IN FACT EARLY TEACHERS OF CHRISTIANITY PROHIBITED THESE FESTIVALS AS UNSUITED TO THE NAME AND CHARACTER OF CHRIST, BECAUSE NO ONE KNEW
EXACTLY WHEN HE WAS BORN, THE BIBLE DOES NOT GIVE A DATE, OR NOT EVEN A MONTH, IT SAYS THE SHEPERDS WERE IN THE FIELDS, THAT IS VERY UNLIKELY TO HAVE BEEN IN DECEMBER AS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY COLD IN JUDEA AND ALSO AT THE SAME TIME HEROD WAS TAKING A CENSUS AT THE TIME FOR THE PURPOSES OF TAXATION AND THIS ALSO WOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE MONTH OF DECEMBER.

ST NICHOLAS WAS A CATHOLIC BISHOP AROUND THE 4TH CENTURY AD AND DIED ON 6TH DECEMBER 345. HE IS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN WELL LOVED IN ASIA MINOR FOR HIS WORK AND BENEVOLENCE. SINCE THE TIME WHEN CATHOLICS MADE HIM A SAINT, HE HAS BECOME TO BE KNOWN AS SANTA CLAUS

MR EINSTEIN IS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID
" LIFE, WHAT IS LIFE
LIFE IS THE PROCESS OF LEARNING, EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY HOUR OF EVERY DAY EVEN IN YOUR SLEEP

Talking about Christianity we have something on tomorrow night (Friday) about the life of St Ninian who brought Christianity to Scotland. It's by Scottish poet Hamish MacDonald and the three performers, Stephen Docherty, Matthew Zagac and Annie Grace are accmpanied by Celtic music from Jillian Frame.
The crew were setting up stage here today, all part of The Wigtown Spring Festival.
So if you are in the area this weekend there
is plenty to see and do.

For details of other things on in the town. www.wigtown-booktown.co.uk
